That's a perfectly valid question and was always a part of my design plans. If you notice I built everything to be very modular. I never thought I would only stay with the HV20. (In fact I recently bought an XH-A1, which I love for the manual controls and presets.)

While I did, in fact, spend $400 on a DIY HD mini-monitor, it handles both component and HDMI so I can use it on my A1 for hand focusing as well as the HV20. Overall I think I spent $1,000 for everything, but only about $100 is specific for the HV20.

For money spent on the 35mm adapter, matte box and rails. I can use all of that on other cameras including the A1.

That's kind of funny, and a little embarrasing. Some1shero brought his stuff and new skater dolly to my house for some test shots. I had set my camera up and decided to take some pictures.

The French Flag is actually offset off the axis and mounted upside down on the hinge. It came incorrectly assembled. I could take one side apart by hand but the other side was too tight and I couldn't find the right sized allen wrench. Murphy's law strikes again.

When flipped over the bottom of the french flag is much lower and fills the gap quite nicely now.

@Duke, there is another thread discussing a portable DVD player from Sony that some users are using as a monitor. It's called the DVP-FX820 - 8" LCD at 800x480 resolution. You mentioned earlier in this thread that you didn't think headrest monitors would be useful because of resolution, do you think the 800x480 resolution is enough to be useful? If not, what res is necessary? What's the Manhattan LCD getting?

for reference, although I'm guessing you've seen it, the thread is here:

With all the equipment invested...I think a prosumer camera would be best in the long run....just my opinion

Can we see pics of your rig with the XH-A1?

How sturdy is your external monitor, especially when accelerating the camera? It seems like it could move around in that ball joint.

Nice rig by the way. I'm pretty inspired knowing $1000 plus the cost of a camcorder could get me a rig like this.

well don't forget... no matter what prosumer cam you get you'll still need a 35 mm adapter. No matter what prosumer cam you get you won't have a full resolution monitor and matte box. As far as narratives go, Duke's rig would blow any STOCK prosumer cam outa the water up until the EX1 imo (which is 6300$). If you get a prosumer cam, you'd still need all the stuff Duke has to get that kind of usability and control. HV20 is just kinda the cheapest foundation to start from.

Good points. And like I said before...the HV20 becomes just a camera head once you attach the adapter..becasue from there you just need to manipulate everything on the DOF adapter.

Prosumer cams can do a lot more in-cam tweakinig during filming...but why do that? I might want to change my mind afterwards...so it's probably best just to capture the best raw-naked picture and manipulate most everything else in post production. But...that also depends on the user.

the adapter mount is a 'pipe clamp' from homedepot for 1,5 euro i think (on the photo (sry no WB ) is just half of the clamp, in my first go i wanted to use just the lower part) i mounted it on the mattebox rod support of the indian rods (duke put a link before). my hv30 is just sticked into the rng35 so i just have to loosen one screw to take away the whole front part. it was important for me to be able to switch pretty quick to the stock hv....
    regards
I am having a really hard time locating the pipe clamp you used. I've checked a few Home Depot stores, but no luck. Is it possible that it's called something different?

    Thumbs up

I guess I may as well add mine to this thread. I needed a top handle for my rig, inspired by the shrigg method but right side up.

Parts: - 6x6 aluminum square tube painted black
    - 1"dia gun flashlight mount on a picatinny rail I cut to size
    - 1" diameter derlin rod for handle, I drilled the divots using a drill press
    - cinevate rail block to mount rig to rails

I can add links to all the parts if anyone wants..

other items, petroff follow focus, cavision 3x3 mattebox, and brevis35 adapter.

That is almost certainly a Sony FX820 DVD player. It has an 800x480 resolution, of which you can tap into 720x480 I believe (or 640x480, not positive). It works very well for framing shots, but in my opinion it is NOT a good tool for assisting focus for use with a 35mm adapter. Otherwise, a great monitor. Cheap, and supposedly ~5-6 hours battery life.

    cheers

    Fantomaz,
What's about the LCD screen? Is that a prism flipper thing or what?
    Thanks. Nice setup btw.

    thanks
yeah its a 90 degree prism viewfinder (mamiya) which flips the image from left to right and 'swing opens' the image 90 degree. so you see the image right side up if you flip the hv30 lcd backwards (like photo). its a temporary solution but i got it pretty cheap and for the 50 euro i paid im very happy with it...

Yes it's a Sony FX820 DVD player... about all it's really good for is framing. Not great for focusing. I'm hoping to find something similar in a HD monitor.

i have the fx820 and i think that with a little pactrice it is great for focusing. you just have to get to know your gear.

Suppose I show everybody my new Scarlet? Think anybody'll notice it's a pic off their website if I photoshop myself behind it?
