Draps, you shot the footage, so it is for YOUR private viewing pleasure. Once you give it the couple to watch, you infringe the copyrights already. To make it 100% clean you get clearances.

Jet, the download charts are from legal download/steaming services, like iTunes or Amazon, they don't reflect any figures from illegal file sharing sites. Downloaded music follows the same rules as a CD.

Would you sync the dancing to a Kevin MacLeod track and find one for the church service too? I am not trying to be funny. It's an honest question.
SmartSound has an album or two (or three) of classic wedding music that once the albums (or individual tracks) are purchased carry with them an almost unlimited royalty free license.

If a couple wants the music they "dance to", or anything that is "their song" that the band (or DJ) can play then I would video that whole dance while the music is recorded as "incidental" to the imagery.

    Seems legit.

Driving over the speed limit is illegal.

Yeah, but getting caught with speeding is in most cases cheaper than getting screwed for copyright infringement.

13 million views on YouTube lip sync wedding proposal, using a copyrighted song. The proposal is highly enhanced (and turns successful) because of this song. Where to draw the line?

I know, I know. The copyright laws are in need of a major overhaul... But not the crap they came up with last time.

Taky, for 13 million views i would voluntarily give the record company several tens of thousands of dollars.

That's hindsight, whereas you're supposed to acquire the license prior to putting it online.
Personally I try to avoid music with a challenging license. Its unfortunate the music with more free licensing is typically on websites which make it a pain to find the music you'll want. Sure, some do have a flash player to stream the music first, but its not like you can easily setup a playlist and listen to it, waiting for the right song to pop up. The songs which are protected are the ones you know or easily encounter. Selecting music is already hard, but with the legit route makes it is even harder.
There is one advantage to not using the well known heavily protected music, it minimizes association with other tracks. If you were to add 'the barbarian horde' by Hans Zimmer to a music video it is highly likely some people will think of Gladiator and are not fully engaged. (Apart from the fact this type of music has to be a very tight fit and should not be part of your average cat video...)

Ironically, even the news outlets have to include their sources and ownership of materials used.
Notice how the copyright holder is Vimeo, and not the guy who made the video?? Hahaha....
You peeps are so naïve, it's cute!

So let's assume you want to do a 100% legal wedding video. What are you left with?
Would you sync the dancing to a Kevin MacLeod track and find one for the church service too? I am not trying to be funny. It's an honest question.
Not sure if this got a serious answer or not, so here is one. www.themusicbed.com

If you're creating a montage type wedding video like the one posted by the OP, you can purchase the license for Youtube usage for $50. It's a limited selection so you aren't going to find the Beatles on there, but you will find some great music that is very fit for weddings (not cheesy piano or violin instrumentals, actual songs. Dave Barnes' "God Gave Me You" and "Until You" are great modern wedding tracks they have featured). You can also buy 5 uses for like $70, if you intend on using the same song for different clients.

Here is a link to a popular story on a videographer getting sued for it. The chances are low that it could happen to you, but there's always the risk. Something to keep in mind!

    Thanks, Scott.
Glad to see a reasonable response to this.

And of course Eugenia did explain quite a bit about licensing and suggest two resources: http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?1...lty-free-music

songfreedom.com would be an affordable option. Only $25 a song.
