Default 'Straight' footage from the Canon 5D MKIII

The description says it all. So much potential with this camera. This is typically 'videoish' - shot around f11. Focus, exposure, etc are all dodgy. Shot on a jerky stills tripod as I don't have a fluid head for my Manfrotto yet.Focussing off the LCD in daylight with no video rig or 'gadgets' whatsoever.

When I get the camera in front of some juicy scenes I'll throw something else together.

The last title of the video suggests that he might be.

Yes, for sure. I've been incredibly tired this week, and busy with work and my kid, but given time I should be able to do a lot with this camera. As I have things worth posting they'll pop up.

Good stuff Doc. I personally don't go for the Canon models as they tend to be out of my price range, but I have used a 5DmkII and was very impressed with its stills (damn those L series lenses are sharp!). The video was a little yuck for me (not yours, but with the camera I shot with), but compared to the HV30 it was definitely more clean.

Enjoy your camera, definitely think that with time and practice you'll learn what you can get out of your beast.

No doubt you have some idea already, but if not... check out the thousands of music videos being shot with it, and take a quick look at your TV (well, here in Aus anyway)... they shoot commercials on them.
Also, check out "Film Riot" on Youtube, all of their skits and I believe their show as well is shot on the 5DmkII.

As usual, it's hard to tell from youtube due to compression. But I'm sure it's great!

I think "video" has a new meaning these days. Back in the day, before HD you could just look and easily say, that's film, that's video, that's film, that's video. And that's what "video" meant, it didn't look like film.

But that's all changed now with the advent of HD and the newer cameras. Now people say "that's video" and they mean it doesn't look like a Peter Jackson movie.

I think people tend to forget what "video" looked like when we used to say "that looks like video".

I thought it would have looked better if the backgrounds hadn't been blown out, but that would have required being able to light the people more with daylight balanced lights or reflectors so you could stop down more.

    Otherwise, it looks fantastic.

Oh, what's the music? I like it.

Couple of things that will help immeasurably for shooting out in daylight: ND filtration, at f11 you may be close to running out of small aperture (depending on the lens you're using. A .9 ND (3 stops reduction) will be simple to use out in bright situations just to get you down into the f8 range. Most of what you had in this video should have been done at around 1 stop less to 1.5 stops.

Second is a loupe, no need for an attachment method (if you want to keep the handling configuration "clean") but something you can hang on a neck lanyard and hold in place while you focus and while you analyze the result.

I think you're going to really enjoy using that "beast" and I look forward to seeing more stuff from you (been a LONG time since I was in Bangkok briefly).

Yeah, I know all of this. This was racing out in the car with an hour to spare, walking around pointing the camera at things to get some footage in the can. It's by no means meant for criticism - it's just stuff shot quickly in the street. And the first footage I've ever recorded on a DSLR. An ND filter is on the cards but I can't afford one yet. I don't have money for a Z-Finder or anything at the moment.

I agree. This is from glancing at the LCD and roughly setting exposure. It's interesting to blow the footage a bit and then see what can be clawed back in post (it's good to know these things - limits). I haven't the time - it's early days - but I am interested in seeing how well I can recover highlights and shadows. Time will tell.
