I was shooting today with my HV30 and I got a notice saying the heads are dirty, use a head cleaning tape. Apparently then it did not record what I was shooting.
Anyone else ever have this happen?

Head cleaning is supposed to be a preventive measure.

Are you saying your footage was never recorded because the head were dirty?
Head and Shoulders, or other shampoo recommended for your dirty head.
Prevention is the best medicine; run a head cleaner for 10 seconds after every 10 hours of use.

I never put in a head cleaning tape like it instructed because I don't have one.
How many 1-hour tapes have you recorded with your camera?
A cleaning tape is a necessary accessory. I usually get one free with a purchase of a 5-pack of Sony Premium tapes.
I find that the head cleaning tapes are getting harder to find in ordinary retail outlets where I live, but they can be found easily enough on eBay, like here:

(I'm not recommending this one, it was just easy to find to post as an example)
I have never used a head cleaning tape. Is it really necessary?
They may be hard to get where I live, or I need one shipped in from another country.
Poolboy, especially in the tropics they are a must!

Dr. Benway, I would super appreciate that. Let me look for one today in Quiapo. If I can't find one there, I will let you know.
I guess needing to clean the heads is another problem with using the technology of tape. The other and probably bigger problem is tape is an old technology and finding this stuff is very hard, especially if you are in a smaller country.
Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes. I will go to Quiapo today which is the center for camera gear in Manila (among other things). I can also try a camera repair shop and see if they have one.
As I mentioned, you might also check if there are any 5-packs of tape containing a free cleaner... they are ubiquitous here i Finland (which is an even smaller country - a little over 5 million, compared to your 100 million or so)...![]()
Don't forget those Chinese-owned electronics stores. You'd be amazed what treasures you can find there sometimes.

I found one in Quiapo. Hopefully it does the trick.
