Interestingly, R A Heinlien has something to say about that, too:

"Sin lies only in hurting others unnecessarily."

    Sounds about right.

I'm not sure if reading about someone's thoughts is a waste of time (well FoxNews maybe). I have read Mein Kampf with the same eagerness as Das Kapital (the first with a bit more urge to throw up though).

Must have been like reading a psychiatric case history of a patient with histrionic and narcissistic personality disorders, CG.

No it's not. Taken in context, about which James was writing, it was funny. You know when a book is tedious but you persevere and in the end it was crap? Well you never get those hours back. It has taught me that when I'm really not enjoying something to close it and choose a new read.

The first part of the book were the thoughts of a rebel (just like any other adolescent). However, in this part, he's looking for a scapegoat for him being a loser (the father's solid hand, the Jewish communists conspiracy leading to WWI and Germany's defeat). The rest is nothing else than a paraphrasing of nationalist thoughts that appeared in the late 1800s written in a lousy, pseudo intellectual language. There is not one original thought in this book, and each page shows how uneducated (not to say ignorant) he actually was.

Besides the topic, the overly stylistic language (which he thought was the language of a bureaucrat or an intellectual) alone didn't make it a reading pleasure.

Doc, the one time I persevered right to the end of a garbage book, I at least allowed myself the pleasure of hurling it across the room.

It was the "official" sequel to H G Wells' "The Time Machine".

It made me think that it's a pity that time travel isn't possible, because if it were, I'd go back to the moment before I opened the book and burn it.

<paraphrasing> where they burn books, they also burn people

Might have to do with the history of my homeland, but burning a book is a very evil deed... as bad the book might be.

.... and when you think about about that folks burned their Beatles albums just because John Lennon's "we are more famous than Jesus" was misunderstood....

Yeah, just a bit of rhetoric, CG. I would never burn a book. After all, someone else might enjoy it, even if I don't. To me, any printed book is a treasure in paper.

But I have thrown books down in disappointment, impatience, and disgust. I've got a wall library full of books of all kinds. Mostly non-fiction, but many good novels and paperbacks also. When the time comes to disperse my estate, my family is going to inherit an extremely esoteric collection of books.

Yes. Absurd. But not surprising. People are crazy.

I lost all my roughly 1500 books (plus all my albums and CDs) when I moved to the Pacific. It was a sign for me for a new direction. Just still haven't found it.

Thanks to the deities for Gutenberg. That has alleviated my loss slightly (the German classics are still a bit scarce)

Well, we're talking about books meanwhile. That falls under Artistic Discussions, no?

In any case, the OP, Al, had left the room and left us to talk among ourselves.

I can't remember that I ever have thrown a book, but I learned somewhen that it is a mistake to start arguing with a woman when she's reading a 500+ pages hardcover book. Dang, had I known she's that good in aiming projectiles,....
